Stephen Connolly was born in Montreal in 1964. He has lived and worked in London and as an academic since completing an award-winning doctorate in Fine Art from the University of Kent in 2018.
As an artist filmmaker since graduating cum laude Central Saint Martins in 1997 [BA Fine Art (film/video)], His work has been shown in solo screenings at the Institute for Contemporary Arts, National Film Theatre (London) and featured in the International Festival Rotterdam (NL) amongst many film and media festival worldwide. He was a juror at the Ann Arbor film festival in 2011 and his work has been funded by prestigious grants from Film London, the Arts Council, and supported by the Wexner Arts Centre.
Stephen’s research critically explores landscape and social aspects of spatiality using the tools of artist cinema. This work engages with a range of places, topics and creative approaches and is developing to encompass more outputs including film, museum experiences, and written work. His work has been funded by the Leverhulme Trust and the university. Stephen is lead supervisor of four practice-as-research PhD candidates at the University for the Creative Arts.
Previously Senior Lecturer in Film at UCA Farnham, Stephen will be working at ICI in Xiamen, Fujian, China for the 23-24 academic year and undertaking social engagement and film projects in this space.
